Darfur or bust!

Ah now you've done it. You've gotten me started on Darfur. Enjoy!!!

The issue to me is not who's fault it is that people are dying. Pointing fingers and naming blame is not going to get people to stop the killings, the rapes and the destruction. In fact, it'll probably just make it worse. I mean after all, once the International Criminal Court put out an arrest warrant for Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir, he took away the very limited aid that was allowed into the region and worsened the violence.
Instead, the issue to me is WHY NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING TO STEP IN AND STOP THE VIOLENCE! Yeah, yeah we got it. Its not "genocide". Whatever. Its still a humanitarian crisis. And as a human race, as a group of people with consciousnesses, we HAVE to step in. There is no excuse not to. There is plenty of relief effort out there that could go to Darfur. And relief isn't the only thing we can do. What happened to condemning al-Bashir? What happened to arresting him? What happened to making people realize that another Holocaust is very possibly occuring right in front of our faces?

We can start by admitting to the death tolls being 400, 000+ people. Yes you count the people who have died from the lack of food and water. Yes you count the people who have died from being raped. Yes you count those who have died from diseased water, and STDS and those who have died just from seeing all of their world disappear right in front of their eyes.
And we can start by educating people about it. I walked into my 7th social studies class to talk to them about Darfur and I had kids asking me, what is that? How can you hide away the deaths of thousands of people?
And we can start by acting like grown ups and speaking out about it! Fine US, you dont want to send aid, at the very least speak out about it! Dont wait like you did in the Holocaust for hundreds of thousands of people to die.

Please.

The past two weeks have been...interesting. I can't say good or bad. Just really busy. We're entering that dreaded last-couple-of-weeks-before-the-end-of-school-final-prep-weeks. Which means its time to buckle down the hatches! AND GET TO WORK! *hide*

Go Ariela! I love what you said about laying blame. Too many times the actual problem is lost in the midst of finger pointing. Who started it doesn't matter, it's who ends it that counts.
